There are several systems and initiatives in place with which we can reach our entire user base.
This includes using our Forums to pass on important information to our players. We have also specifically designed specific game content around educating our players about online safety. We expect the users of our products to read and agree to abide by the Rules of Conduct. By agreeing to follow our rules, our players help to maintain a friendly and fair environment for everyone. Anyone that is found to be violating our rules will be informed of the rule that they have broken, presented with evidence of the offence where applicable, and encouraged to re-read the rules before playing again.

Our forums are used to educate, as well as entertain. Jagex Moderators have the ability to highlight any threads that they feel are particularly important, so that players can spot them easily. We also have special forums for our Player Moderators, where they can discuss reporting procedures and ideas on how to improve the community. The aim of the Player Moderator Forum is to help the PMods enhance and monitor the community through teamwork and by escalating any issues directly to Jagex.

The accessibility and regular updates of RuneScape allow us to develop content with the specific aim of educating our players about online safety and account security. We create this content as a useful source of information for all players, no matter what their level of experience in the game. We also ensure that the content is enjoyable, as we acknowledge that education should never be boring. In addition to the in-game content, both the RunScape and FunOrb homepages contain guides that help our players ensure they play our games in a safe and secure manner. These guides can be found here for RuneScape, and here for FunOrb.

We believe strongly that education plays an important role in protecting our players. The Stronghold of Player Safety has been designed to be an enjoyable challenge for all of our players, with the focus on teaching important lessons about interacting with people that you do not know. The prisoners’ stories explain the risks of giving out personal information to strangers, and the examination tests each player’s understanding of our contact information rule and the Report Abuse facility.
The Stronghold encourages our players to learn about playing safely, and they will be rewarded for selecting the correct action in each scenario for which they are presented. Many users of Runescape will already be aware of how play safely, but the Stronghold of Player Safety is a valuable resource for less experienced players and anyone who is looking for a fun and rewarding way to learn more about how to stay safe online.

No player wants to have one of their gaming accounts stolen, and we want all of our players to have an excellent understanding of the importance of good account security. The Stronghold of Security has been designed to educate our players while they fight increasingly fearsome monsters in a bid to collect each level’s rewards. As our players pass through the Stronghold they are tested on their knowledge of Recovery Answers, Bank PINs and how they can protect their account password. Click here for more details about helping your child keep their account secure.

Town criers can be found walking around some of the various villages, towns and cities located within RuneScape. Town Criers give information about the Rules of Conduct and in-game Player Moderators: how to become one, what they can and cannot do and their role in RuneScape.

In order to show our players a variety of useful security tips, we have implemented banner adverts into our website. These short animations imitate an in-game security problem and then show the player how to resolve or prevent it. These often appear on the front page of our website and change on a regular basis in order to educate our players on a variety of important security issues.
