WHO IS JAGEX?
For more than 25 years Jagex has built living, evolving, community-driven worlds enjoyed by players around the globe. What began as a small studio in Cambridge has grown into one of the most enduring, and popular online communities in gaming.
Today, as we celebrate 25 years of RuneScape, we’re entering a new era for Jagex - one defined by growth, creativity, and deeper connection with our players and community.

Originally founded in 2000 in Cambridge, UK, by Andrew Gower, with a simple but ambitious idea: to create an online fantasy game that could be played directly in a web browser and evolve continuously alongside its players.

RUNESCAPE'S BIRTH
They began developing the MMORPG in 1999 launching the free to play version in Jan 2001 quickly grew into one of the world’s most recognisable and enduring MMORPGs. Built on accessibility, depth, and player freedom, RuneScape pioneered many of the principles that define modern online games, persistent worlds, live updates, and community-led evolution.

RS25
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF RUNESCAPE
In 2026, Runescape turns 25. Few games if any achieve that longevity let alone while remaining culturally relevant and actively played. RS25 is a celebration of that achievement, but also a statement of intent.
As we look ahead, we’re evolving into Jagex: The Runescape Company, focused on growing and stewarding the Runescape universe across multiple games and experiences, and building it to thrive for decades to come.
